Body Revolution or Body Devolution?

I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way
Don’t hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you’re set
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Lady Gaga has done a very good job at her art of marketing and drawing people in to her belief system. When her Born This Way song came out it topped the charts and was also hailed as the new “gay anthem”

One of the most alarming aspects of the song was the blurring of truth with Gaga’s own twisted message. On the one hand, we can agree that “God made no mistakes” we can also agree we must “love ourselves” (cr Mark 12:31). Though we may be “born this way” we are also born in a fallen world, which translates into born with flaws, temptation is a threat to our person-hood. [continue thought]

Gaga’s current initiative stemmed from the media’s criticism of her recent weight gain. She responded by posting several pictures of herself in her underwear with the caption “bulimia and anorexia since I was 15” The goal was to let her “little monsters” post their own pictures of their flaws or challenges in order to prompt their own self-acceptance. Although one would be hard-pressed to bash love and self-acceptance, there is something inherently wrong with this “Body Revolution”

Firstly, let us discuss this matter on a purely external level. Gaga’s website is currently flooded with individuals who have posted naked and near-naked images of themselves for the world to see. I fear for the youth who are exposing themselves in an area that’s not necessarily safe. Though posted for a seemingly noble purpose, who knows where these images are ending up, or for what purpose they are being used by anyone who has access. This can range from lustful imaginations to anorexics who are seeking what is called “thinspiration”

On a spiritual level this is disturbing due to the gross infatuation with the body. St. Paul tells us that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and that our body and its members are members of Christ. We are to be focusing our time and energy into making the body a dwelling-place of the Lord, not an exposition. Love for Christ should be the very first step towards love of oneself. If I love Christ, then I love my maker. Christ who fashioned me after His own image and likeness and breathed His breath into me to give me life. This body He gave me is “not my own” (cr 1Cor 6:19), and is for His glorification.

Gaga takes it once step further in that we are not to simply “tolerate” the behavior, but we should love it.

The Body Revolution continues to provide a platform for sinful behaviors to be considered appropriate and ones which should not only be tolerated, but loved

The “Born this way” mantra is nothing but a very selfish and indignant excuse for aspects of person-hood which result from the fall. In fact, the Body Revolution continues to promote the message that anything and everything is acceptable behavior. Gaga takes it once step further in that we are not to simply “tolerate” the behavior, but we should love it. We were born to serve the Lord. Any flaws are either a result of our fallen nature, our willingness to give into temptation, or the result of others’ willingness to fall into sin. God did not make mistakes, he allows us to fight against the evils presented to us so that we may become more loving, more strength-filled, more humble servants.

Gaga continuously puts herself up as the sole savior of the outcast and awkward

The third aspect in which this initiative is disturbing is once again, Gaga’s message that it is in her abode that the outcast and the awkward may find rest and peace. She is very transparent and makes it very clear that she cares for those who are mistreated, however she is continuously creating havens of her own so that those who may be lost feel they have found their way in her. She has her own social networking site, and her fans refer to her as “Mother Monster” As Christians we know that there is ONE individual who is THE way and THE truth and THE Life and that individual is our FATHER, Lord and Savior. Our Mother is the Church and our family is within the community.
